# How to Plan a Week's Meals and Save Time and Money

> The foundation of a successful weekly plan is **shared ingredients, not separate recipes**: pick 3-4 core ingredients and build 7 different meals on them. That way you buy in cheaper quantities, prep once, and still eat varied food.

The daily question 'what shall we eat today?' takes more mental energy than we imagine, and it pushes the decision to the moment we are hungry — the worst possible time for any food decision.

## Start with the ingredient, not the recipe

Most people plan backwards: they pick 7 different recipes, then discover the shopping list has 40 items and half the vegetables will spoil.

**The right approach:** pick **3 proteins, 4 vegetables and 2 starches**, and build every meal from them. For example:

  - **Chicken:** a tray bake one day · soup from the carcass another · a salad from the leftovers another
  - **Mince:** kofta one day · bolognese another · stuffed vegetables another
  - **Lentils and chickpeas:** soup one day · salad another · falafel another

That way you buy less, prep less, and eat varied food.

## Prep day: two hours that save five

Pick a day in the week (usually Friday) and set aside **two hours for prep, not for cooking**. The distinction matters: you are not cooking 7 meals — you are preparing their components.

**What goes into those two hours:**

  - Washing and cutting all the vegetables and storing them in boxes.
  - Boiling the pulses, rice and basic pasta.
  - Cutting, seasoning and portioning the protein into meal-sized bags.
  - Making one or two sauces that go with everything.
  - Boiling eggs and toasting nuts.

After that every meal in the week takes **20 minutes instead of an hour**, because the tedious part is done.

## What prepares well and what does not

**Prepares excellently:** soups (they improve), stews, sauces, boiled pulses, rice, shaped raw kofta, and roasted vegetables.

**Does not prepare:** dressed leafy salads, fried food, fish, pasta in its sauce, and avocado.

And **the compromise for salads:** prepare everything separately in a jar — dressing at the bottom, then the solid ingredients, and the leaves on top. Toss it only as you eat.

## The shopping list: write it in supermarket order

A small detail that saves real time: write the list **grouped by the sections of the shop** (produce · protein · dairy · tinned · frozen) rather than by recipe.

That way you walk the shop once instead of ten times, and you reduce the impulse buying that happens while you wander.

And an important rule: **do not shop hungry**. Studies say it increases purchasing by 20-40% and skews it towards ready-made food.

## The freezer: your bank

Set aside a shelf in the freezer for **'ready meals'**. Every time you cook something freezable, make extra and freeze a portion.

After two months you will have 10-15 ready meals for the days with no time — and that noticeably reduces takeaway orders.

**Write on every box:** the name and the date. Without dates the freezer becomes a graveyard of anonymous boxes.

## Containers and storage: half the plan's success

A prep plan usually fails at storage rather than at cooking. Food that was prepared and never seen gets forgotten and spoils.

**The rules that make it work:**

  - **Clear containers**, not opaque — what you can see, you eat.
  - **Uniform sizes** that stack and save fridge space.
  - **A dated label** on every box, with the oldest at the front of the shelf.
  - **A dedicated shelf** for prepared food so it is the first thing you see.

The safe window in the fridge for cooked food is **3-4 days**, so anything for the second half of the week must be frozen rather than chilled.

## Budget: buy in season

Vegetables and fruit in season are **two to three times cheaper** and taste far better. Building the weekly plan around what is in season lowers the bill with no compromise in quality.

Protein follows the same logic: **cheap cuts taste better in slow cooking** — chuck, shin and neck make a better stew than fillet at a quarter of the price, because their collagen turns to gelatine.

And pulses are the cheapest protein there is: a kilo of lentils delivers more protein than a kilo of meat at a tenth of the price — and a day or two of pulses a week makes a clear difference to the budget.

## A model week

  - **Saturday:** chicken tray bake with vegetables (prepping the chicken for the week).
  - **Sunday:** pasta with tomato sauce (quick after a working day).
  - **Monday:** lentil soup + salad (light and cheap).
  - **Tuesday:** kofta from the frozen mince + rice.
  - **Wednesday:** eggs with vegetables or shakshuka (the fastest day).
  - **Thursday:** fish in the oven (done in 25 minutes).
  - **Friday:** the gathering dish + prep day for the week ahead.

## The rule of the empty day

Leave one day a week with no plan. A plan with no flexibility breaks the first time something comes up, and after that it is abandoned entirely.

That day becomes 'leftovers' or 'anything' — and it reduces food waste too, because you finish off what is left.

## Count the saving

Planning saves in three places: **less waste** (because you buy what you will use), **less delivery** (because there is food ready), and **bulk buying** (which is cheaper per unit).

And the difference is not small — an average household saves 20 to 30% of its food budget simply by planning regularly, with no drop in the quality of the food at all.

## FAQ
