Healthy breakfast runs into one problem: there's no time in the morning. Overnight oats solve it — five minutes before bed and it's ready straight from the fridge, and it keeps three days, so you can make three jars at once.

In a glass jar, combine the oats, milk, yoghurt, chia seeds, honey, cinnamon and vanilla and stir well.

Seal the jar and refrigerate for at least six hours — or simply overnight. The oats absorb the milk and the chia forms a gel.

Stir it, and if it's too thick add a splash of milk. Top with the banana slices and nuts and eat straight from the jar.

Tips that actually matter
- Rolled oats, not instant — instant oats turn pasty and the texture suffers.
- Add the banana in the morning rather than at night so it doesn't brown.
- Make three jars at once and vary the topping: strawberry, berries, peanut butter, or cocoa.
- Want more protein? Add a scoop of protein powder or increase the yoghurt.
People also ask
How long does it keep?
Three days in a sealed jar in the fridge — without the topping. Add the fruit as you eat.
Can I heat it?
Yes, a minute in the microwave, but it's designed to be eaten cold and that's where the time saving comes from.
How many calories?
About 340 with the banana and nuts, including 12g of protein and 8g of fibre — a breakfast that holds until lunch.
